NASA’s Mysterious New Discovery Is Keeping Scientists Up At Night
It's hardly a secret that space is vast and full of weird secrets and each year astronomers scientists and researchers are constantly searching the skies for a new planet asteroid comet or if they're lucky a black hole owing to the advancement in technology they have made some interesting new finds and even debunked some existing theories from strange exoplanets and alien radio signals to glass on the moon space sure is a strange and exciting place welcome to Science Reads where we will take you on a journey through some of the most mysterious and exciting recent discoveries in outer space sitting 325 light years away from the earth is the planet Centauri b the gas giant is insanely massive very similar in composition to Jupiter but is at least 11 times its size it belongs to a category of planets called super Jupiter's exceeding the mass of even our solar system's largest planet the planet orbits a pair of stars known as a binary system what makes it so special aside from its mammoth size is the fact that it has the widest orbit of any known planet to date to compare its orbit is at least 100 times wider than that of Jupiter and 560 times that of earth not just that the two stars that it orbits together have a mass that's equal to 6 to 10 times the sun up until its discovery no planet had been found to orbit a star more than three times the sun's mass the discovery of b Centauri b is certainly game changing and completely changes the picture about massive planets or super Jupiters and their host stars the discovery comes as a surprise and completely redefines the way we look at how planets form proving just how complex planet formation is and how little we probably understand about it a remarkable discovery was made using the first all-sky survey produced by the eROSITA X-ray telescope it is depicted as a huge circular structure of hot gas below the plane of the milky way occupying a huge chunk of the southern sky there is a similar structure in the northern sky which has been known for a while now and when taken together the northern and southern structures resemble a single hourglass shaped set of bubbles the x-ray emission picked up and observed by eROSITA shows that the intrinsic size of the bubbles is at least up to 50 000 light years across which is almost as large as the entire milky way itself these bubbles are being referred to as the eROSITA bubbles and studies are showing that they share a lot of similarities to the famous fermi bubbles these bubbles were caused either by star-forming activity or a violent outburst from the supermassive black hole at the galactic center the mysterious appearance of these bubbles could actually be useful in helping astronomers understand the cosmic cycle of matter in and around the milky way and perhaps even other galaxies a giant mysterious comet was discovered in 2021 by astronomers Gary bernstein and Pedro Bernardinelli now known as the comet Bernard and Ellie Bernstein it is estimated to be one thousand times the size of what a typical comet would be it has an extremely elongated orbit and was seen journeying inward from the distant Oort cloud till date it is the most distant comet to be discovered on its incoming path
and by far the biggest one we have found yet astronomers have made some rough estimates about the comet stating that its icy body must have a diameter of 60 to 124 miles bringing it at about 10 times wider than any known comet in comparison comet 67p Cheryumov Garasimenko which was orbited by the ESA's rosetta spacecraft was only 2.5 miles wide the comet shines at magna 220 sadly making it out of reach for amateur astronomers telescopes if estimates are accurate the comet is scheduled to be making its closest approach to planet earth in 2031 but still at quite a distance mini moons are small satellites that enter the earth's orbit for a short period of time scientists first spotted one
such mini moon calling it 2020 so
while looking for near-earth asteroids using the nasa-funded survey telescope in Hawaii they noticed its unusual orbit in small size which of course got everyone curious about the little satellite however what was initially thought to be a mini moon turned out to be completely human-made after analyzing its strange orbit they came to the realization that 2020 so had swung around the planet several times over the last decade and made a fairly close approach to earth in 1996 which suggested that it could be a human-made object that was launched into space and as it turns out the little mini moon temporarily orbiting earth wasn't just a chunk of rock but in fact a rocket booster from the 1960s it proved to be a very difficult object to characterize due to its faintness it was the color observations taken from the large binocular telescope lbt that suggested that 2020so was certainly not an asteroid after comparing data the researchers finally got a match and it was confirmed makes us wonder just how many human-made objects could be floating around space being mistaken for alien objects nothing like ghostly radio circles that no one can seem to explain to get scientists excited the Australian square kilometer array pathfinder is among the world's most sensitive radio telescopes and the observations collected by it have left scientists and astronomers completely baffled orcs odd radio circles in space as they are called are simply giant circles of faint light in radio wavelengths that appear somewhat brighter around the edges like a bubble circular objects like these are not uncommon in space but these orcs don't correspond with any known phenomenon when a team led by Barbel Koribalski of CSIRO combined data from Artois sources they got an image of a faint ring what's even more mysterious is what they discovered right at the center of that ring an elliptical radio galaxy DES J010224.33-245039.5 the likelihood of finding even
one of these there is slim
let alone all three radio
signals orc and galaxy all in one
black holes are truly one of the more mysterious and exciting objects to study in space we know that they are hungry greedy beings that eat up everything in their vicinity and scientists have long theorized that they can move too but movement is relatively rare owing to the sheer mass and the amount of force it would require to actually get them going but astronomers made an odd discovery with a supermassive black hole seemingly racing across the universe at a whopping 110,000 miles per hour or 177,000 kilometers per hour and no one knows exactly why scientists are unsure why something so big and heavy is moving so quick but for now they state that there could be two possibilities we could either be observing the merger of two supermassive black holes as the movement could simply be the newborn black hole recoiling from the merger on the other hand this could be a supermassive black hole pair with one of them being more hidden making it difficult to see and study but for now the speedy black hole is moving swiftly in the sky leaving us with no way to know just how and why stellar explosions and the collapse of giant supernovas are not exactly a new discovery at this point but a massive explosion
nearly 200 million light years away has left scientists and astronomers scratching their heads leading to the classification of a completely new type of space explosion the super bright explosion discovered in 2018 has famously come to be known as the
cow in a galaxy called cgcg137-068
it took everyone by surprise when they observed the explosion that was almost 10 times brighter than normal and it faded out over just a couple months after a
lot of initial speculation researchers analyzed the x-ray data of the same event and also found that sos thing within the cow was pulsing in soft x-rays and consuming a burst every 4.4 milliseconds the periodic pulsation could either be from a neutron star suggesting that 4.4 milliseconds could be the actual spin rate while if a black hole is a cause for all of this then the emission could be produced from the material being ejected during the supernova this generating x-ray emissions but whether it's a neutron star or black hole that's the main culprit there are just too many questions left unanswered both arguments are extremely difficult to explain and solving the curious case of the cosmic cow is not going to be that simple exoplanets have now become an exciting new branch of astronomy and it seems like researchers are discovering new ones every other week a new found alien rocky world could now be the reason we might be able to understand the darker and stranger sections of the exoplanet family tree the exoplanet Gj367b is unlike anything else we have seen in our solar system and it is scorching hot the planet orbits a red dwarf host star once every 7.7 hours it is a rocky world that is much denser than earth and very similar in structure to the planet mercury the planet is only 70 percent as large as the earth and its mass is about 55 making it perhaps the lightest known exoplanets till date it is categorized as an ultra short period planet one of the most mysterious classes of exoplanets and we don't know much about them yet or why they are able to orbit that quickly studying Gj367b and its suspiciously short orbit could give us the answers we are looking for nasa isn't the only space agency that has been breaking ground with its discoveries china has made significant contributions with its missions of late and the u22 rover has made some extremely fascinating discoveries on the surface of the moon Chinese scientists published an analysis of a strange substance they detected on the far side of the moon with the help of the u2 rover from the change 4 mission the substance is gel-like and appears green in color thought to be fragments of minerals that have been cemented together the data was collected from the u22s panoramic and hazard avoidance cameras and the visible near-infrared spectrometer there has been much speculation over the origin of the mysterious substance but researchers are now leaning more towards the possibility of it being formed due to a volcanic eruption while working its way across the von carmen crater on the far side of the moon the rover spotted yet another mysterious object the cube-shaped object on the horizon was spotted on the mission's 36th lunar day our space the Chinese language science outreach channel under the Chinese national space administration referred to the object as a mystery huts or even the Chinese cube scientists are showing a keen interest in studying the object some say it could simply be a large boulder excavated due to an impact event as of now the mystery huts will remain just that a mystery astronomers have found a huge sphere-shaped cavity spanning nearly 500 light years located in the sky among the constellations perseus and taurus the giant cavity is completely surrounded by the perseus and taurus clouds a region in space that is known for star formation the two clouds of gas appear side by side when you look at them in the milky way each with enormous star-forming regions but this newfound cavity actually proves that it has been an optical illusion this entire time the 3d maps from the esa's gaia space observatory actually shows just how far the clouds are separated from an enormous void of nothing the newly detected chasm is roughly around 115 times the distance between earth and the alien star proxima centauri all evidence of the void and how it came to be points towards catastrophic supernova explosions from the past astronomers have known about these two clouds for decades now but the giant space of emptiness has come as a huge surprise presenting a new opportunity for research into what could have caused the enormous cavity in the first place that's all for today what other awesome discoveries have you heard of recently let us know in the comments don't forget to smash that like button subscribe to the channel and hit that notification bell so you don't miss another update from us thanks for reading and see you next time
