Hubble Telescope's Creepiest Images
space the final frontier if sci-fi movies have taught us anything it's that space is super creepy but just in case you missed that memo we've got photos from the famous hubble telescope to prove just how creepy it is ghoulish apparitions ghostly figures gazing eyes you might want to watch this one with the lights on welcome to fact nominal today we're getting spooky with creepiest space photos ever taken by the hubble telescope so let's jump right in space face trick or treat just in time for halloween 2019 nasa released this incredible picture of what appears to be the face of a titan from final space imagine looking out to space and seeing this thing staring back at you with an alien-like round head glowing eyes and gaping mouth that looks like it's screeching this looks like one terrifying space demon in reality it's something almost as cool the collision of two galaxies 704 million light years away the two piercing eyes are each the core of a galaxy the face outline is made up of young blue stars while other clumps of stars form the nose and mouth features galaxies don't always collide in such a spectacular and violent way as the arp madore 2026 424 system and the spectre which arose from it will only appear this way for a short time well relatively short around 100 million years eventually they'll merge completely ghost nebula who you gonna call this creepy apparition known as the ghost of cassiopeia might look like something out of an 80s movie but the ic-63 nebula appears so ghostly because of the nearby blue giant star gamma cassiopeia the blue giant bombards ic63 with ultraviolet radiation which causes the red glow the blue color is due to the light reflecting off the nebula's dust someone hasn't been doing the dusting shores it seems gamma cassiopeia is pretty impressive itself it burns with the fire of 34 000 suns regardless of the science behind it this spectacular snap of the ghostly figure with a long flowing veil takes everyone's breath away the shot was taken in august 2016. pillars of creation the pillars of creation really live up to their dramatic name these gargantuan towering columns of cool hydrogen gas and dust are incubators for new stars the giant eerie figures rising into the darkness are part of the eagle nebula a star forming region in the constellation serpents around 6 500 light years away the tallest is four light years from base to tip that's right they're so big we have to measure them in light years they protrude like stalagmites from the wall of a dark molecular cloud the pillars are being eroded by ultraviolet light which slowly reveals even denser globules of gas buried within them these globules have been given the very serious name evaporating gaseous globules or eggs for short inside the eggs are where embryonic stars are forming hourglass eye no this isn't a sci-fi novel cover or a 70s rock band poster although it probably should be because it's so cool in 1996 the hubble telescope took a look at the hourglass nebula and it looked right back at them the aptly named hourglass nebulous hourglass shape is fascinating in itself but the shape of an eye in the center is extraordinary and extra creepy the eye which yes is staring directly into your soul is even complete with a shiny iris and pupil the hourglass nebula known as mycn18 is a young nebula about 8 000 light years away and is actually centered around a dying star reflection nebula a dark figure appears to be emerging from the clouds in this creepy pig from the hubble in 1999 they had just completed repairs on the telescope in time to capture the spooky shot of the reflection nebula ngc 1999 people see the head and shoulders of a human-like figure emerging from the thick clouds a reflection nebula is described like fog around a street lamp it is only visible because light from a source within is illuminating the dust a bright young star called v380 orionis which you can see as the brightest spot shining in the picture is the source that is illuminating the dust clouds the incredible almost jet black figure is a dark cloud called a bok globule named after the astronomer bart bach the globule is a cold cloud of gas molecules and cosmic dust it is so dense it blocks all light from shining through it i of sauron a great eye lidless reef in flame the resemblance between the eye of sauron from lord of the rings and this terrifying fiery eye captured by the hubble telescope has us cowering like frodo the image shows the area around the star formalhout astronomers use the advanced camera's coronagraph to block of the star's bright glare so that a faint planet called formal health b could be seen this is what causes the dark pupil-like circle in the middle of the picture no matter the explanation it makes for one creepy picture ghost head nebula two menacing glowing eyes stare out from the eerie swirling green and red clouds the ghost head nebula is part of the large magenta cloud and according to the hubble team the two piercing eyes disappointingly named a1 and a2 are glowing white-hot blobs of hydrogen and oxygen these hot blobs actually contain massive stars within them a single star in a1 in the left for the picture and several in the more complex a2 on the right the ghost head nebula is a hundred and seventy thousand light years away from earth telltale heart this image is so creepy the team named it after an edgar allan poe story the telltale heart the ghoulish swirling sickly green clouds are reminiscent of a smoking witch's cauldron hubble bubble toil and trouble the image of the crab nebula shows a dead star in the center while the star may be dead it won't let that stop it in the center is the telltale heart of the star called a neutron star it is the crushed core of the dead star and while it is the same mass as the sun it is squeezed into a super dense sphere that is a hundred billion times stronger than steel and only a few miles wide this heart is spinning 30 times a second and producing a magnetic field that generates one trillion volts of energy zap this immense activity causes wave-like patterns that can be seen emanating from the dead star most clearly to the top right of the heart ghostly castles in the sky not much is known about the striking and eerie image of the iras-05437 plus 2502 nebula in the taurus constellation it is close to the central plain of our milky way galaxy but it hasn't been studied in detail unlike most of hubble's usual subjects the picture shows towering castle-like fandoms rising into the darkness experts aren't sure what the bright arc-shaped object that is the focal point near the center of the image is it is thought that a high-velocity young star from a nearby cluster traveling 124 000 miles per hour 200 000 kilometers per hour interacting with the nebula's dust may have caused the sharp bright boomerang shape either way it makes for an eerily beautiful image of our milky way tarantula nebula this creepy crawly image of the tarantula nebula might send shivers up arachnophobe spines the nebula formerly known as 30 doradus gets its nickname from its spindly spidery filaments of gas according to the european space agency the spidery fingers of the tarantula nebula are not so far away located only 160 thousand light years away in the large melangelic cloud the esa says that the tarantula nebula is one of the largest and most intense regions of active star formation known to exist anywhere in our galactic the round blue bubble shapes in the lower left of the image also show the neighboring honeycomb nebula which has baffled scientists since its discovery in the early 1990s
