space facts that will give you  nightmares  number 10 the distance between the earth  and the moon  the moon is the closest major space  object to the earth  and it's evident as we see it every  single day on a clear night  however even the distance of the moon  from the earth can be  monstrous if you look at it another way  when you look at it from the perspective  of space  384 400 kilometers on average  might not seem that far away but how far  away is that exactly  well with 384 400 kilometers you would  be able to stack  every single planet in our solar system  next to each other  and still have some space left it's  incredible that humans were able to land  on something so far away back in the 60s  another object we can clearly see from  the earth is the sun  which is about 400 times bigger than the  moon but it's also about 400 times  further from the earth than the moon is  which is why they look like they're the  same size  when we see them in the sky number nine  jupiter's crazy moons  jupiter is by far the biggest planet in  our solar system the planet is so big in  fact that it's often considered by  astronomers to be a failed star  rather than a planet due to its sheer  size  jupiter has developed its own ecosystem  over the course of billions of years and  one strange thing about it is its crazy  moons  jupiter has about 79 moons and only 53  of them  actually have a name one of its most  famous moons is called  europa which is covered by a layer of  ice that has visible cracks all over it  it almost looks like a glass ball that's  ready to be shattered  another strange moon is io which  actually has quite a unique appearance  and at the top of the moon there's a  towering active volcano that sends blue  flames about 250 miles into the air  which was once caught by the new horizon  spacecraft when it was on its way to  pluto  number eight the biggest volcano in the  universe well there are plenty of  notable volcanoes on earth that are  quite frankly terrifying in their own  right but did you know that there are  actually huge volcanoes located  outside our planet some of these  volcanoes are so big  that they make the biggest volcanoes  here on earth seem like fireplace  chimneys  well there are plenty of volcanoes  located on planets that we have yet to  fully discover  the largest volcano in the universe that  we have already discovered  is called olympus mons and it's located  on mars  the height of this volcano is about 25  kilometers or 16 miles high  which is about three times the height of  mount everest if each day on olympus  mass  you walked for 13 hours in total you  would need roughly two days to reach the  peak  if the height wasn't enough the sheer  size of this volcano is ridiculous as  well  it's about 374 miles or 602 kilometers  across  which is roughly the same size as the  state of arizona  while this volcano seems inactive today  there may be a time when it becomes  active again  as we don't exactly know everything  about mars geography yet  number 7 venus anomalies venus is at its  closest point  the closest planet to earth while  mercury  is the closest on average so you would  assume that a day or a year on venus  might be similar to that on earth right  well venus has an excruciatingly slow  speed  it actually takes over 116 earth days  for venus to complete  one day this is despite the fact that it  only takes 225 earth days for venus to  complete a full orbit of the sun  so a year on venus only lasts slightly  less than two whole days  venus is also famously hot the average  temperature on the planet is over  820 degrees to nearly 900 degrees  fahrenheit  number six planet made of diamonds  there's one planet  in the universe that never had to worry  about running out of diamonds  anytime soon 55 cans 3e is a recently  discovered planet that's located about  40 light years away from the earth  it's a carbon-rich planet that's  actually so dense in carbon  that scientists believe it might  actually be composed of diamonds  entirely  the planet is about twice the size of  the earth so you can imagine if a little  piece of this planet could be brought to  earth  it would completely collapse the diamond  industry here  number five mercury is shrinking while  the earth is one of the only  tectonically active planets that we know  of  if not the only tectonically active  planet  recent evidence suggests some tectonic  activity happening in mercury as well  when the messenger spacecraft was taking  hd photos of mercury for the first time  it noticed that there were these small  cliff-like objects located on mercury  surface  that seemed like they were formed  relatively recently  if they were that means that mercury  might these discoveries is the unique  atmosphere of pluto  the haze from pluto's atmosphere can  reach a height of over 1 000 miles above  its surface  this is much higher than the height of  the earth's atmosphere despite earth  being a much larger planet than pluto  pluto's atmosphere has at least 20  distinct layers to it  and these layers are much cooler than  previously thought and there are also  gaps in the atmosphere that let nitrogen  get out of the planet number one the  very big possibility of life  outside our planet while sometimes we  may feel lonely here on earth as it's  currently the only planet we know of  that has actual life on it  we might not be all that lonely after  all while there has never been a  confirmation of life on another planet  the possibility has never been ruled out  by neither nasa nor any other space  agency in the world  why's that it's because we keep  discovering things in the universe that  we  never in a million years thought we  would including galaxies  outside the milky way planets outside  our solar system and so much more  the possibilities of further discoveries  are endless  and when you add the rate at which these
